Steam Dryer
|
The Exergy steam dryer was developed in the early 70's at the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. It uses superheated steam for drying of solid materials like paper pulp, saw dust, wood waste, sugar beat pulp and other cattle feed, peat, sludge and other wet solid waste. High-pressure steam (15-30 bar), flue gases, thermal oil or even electricity can indirectly heat the dryer.
The dryer consists of a closed loop of drying loop, where superheated steam is circulated by a fan. The steam originates from the wet material and is super-heated indirectly in a tubular heat exchanger by the heat source. The wet material is introduced to the circuit and dried quickly during its pneumatic transport through the drying loop, and then separated in a cyclone. The residence time is only 10 to 30 seconds, but still dryness close 99,9% dry solids can be achieved without any risk for fire or explosion.

Exergy Steam Dryer
|
The short residence time and absence of air ensures non-oxidised product. Also, complete sterilisation of the product is guaranteed. This is important for many products such as animal feed, fish meal, tobacco, beet pulp for human consumption etc.
Since the process is closed, emissions to the atmosphere are avoided, and it is possible to treat the generated steam condensate separately. The Exergy dryer can operate at pressures from 0,2 bar to 8 bar gauge, thus the moisture vaporised from the wet material can be used as a secondary steam. By utilising this steam, approximately 80-90% of the drying energy can be recovered. Usually it is integrated with other processes like evaporation/distillation, electricity production or district heating
